We work with bodies all day long and although the human form is incredible, this setting is not a “turn on” for most therapist, it’s work. The massage is about you and you feeling good. Relax and enjoy your massage and you will more than likely be the only one that remembers you had one, so there is no reason to feel any shame. So no one is confused, erections are normal and it doesn’t bother me nor most other therapist I talk to, they just happen. Women also have the same reaction, however, it is not as visibly noticeable and out there as it is for men. With all these things combined, an erection is just a natural involuntary physical reaction. Massage is the art of touch, doing very important and beneficial things for your body it is increasing the blood flow to your muscles, stimulating the nervous system and releasing serotonin, which is a ‘feel good’ hormone that is secreted in the brain by specialised neurons. If you have a massage by a male therapist and get an erection, it doesn’t mean it is something sexual nor does it make you ‘gay’. Just relax, enjoy and know that you are not being judged for getting one, it is just the body reacting to something that feels good, it is normal and is what it is. If you want to lay there naked or you would prefer a modesty towel, personally, to me, it is up to you, it is your body and about you being comfortable. We really don’t want you to feel uncomfortable and it is really neither here nor there to us. Most massage therapists won’t stare at your physical anatomy. So to all the guys out there: You are not alone and you don’t need to be embarrassed. And while everyone thinks these jokes are hilarious, the reality is that every massage therapist does have to deal with heightened moments with male clients over the course of their career.īut let me just say, erections during a massage are totally normal and on average I would estimate that 70% of clients get one.
As a professional therapist that has been in the massage industry for 17 years, I can say I’ve seen everything and I’m guessing, like all massage therapists, I hear an endless stream of “happy ending” jokes. I often have new clients state that they are worried about getting an erection during a massage and treatments and seems to be a struggle for many men. This is a topic that I tossed up whether to write about or not, as I didn’t wish to offend anyone, but it is a serious issue that I want to be put straight.
